Chapter Seven
They made it back to her house by early afternoon. Latte ambushed them when they walked in the door, meowing and weaving around Lorelei's ankles. Hugh had texted her after he fed Latte breakfast, so she knew the cat had eaten, but Latte was adamant that she get fed again, so Lorelei dropped a couple of cat treats into her bowl for the cat to snack on while she got her mother settled in the guest room.
If she hurried, she should be able to pick up most of her afternoon shift and let Jenny, who had agreed to stay past the end of her normal shift, go home. She changed quickly, put her hair up, and then pulled Latte's cat carrier out of the closet, intending to take the cat with her to make up for having been gone for so long. She almost never left Latte alone overnight, and felt terrible for having done so the night before.
"What are you doing?" her mother asked, standing in the doorway to the kitchen where Lorelei was straightening the cat bed she kept in the carrier for Latte.
"I was just about to head to work," Lorelei said. "I'll be back this evening. You know where everything is â feel free to help yourself to whatever you find in the cupboards or in the fridge."
"You're not taking the cat, are you?"
"She goes to work with me a lot," Lorelei said.
"I know that," her mother said. "Don't you think it would be a better idea for you to leave her here? If someone really is trying to kill me, she might let me know if they manage to track me down and give me time to hide somewhere."
"Just a couple of months ago, you were so terrified of Latte's abilities that you didn't even want to be in the same house as her," Lorelei said. "Now you want me to leave her here with you so you can use her as a sort of Geiger counter for danger?"
"She's already saved my life once," her mother said. "I like her now. I know I wasn't very open to her abilities before, but you have to admit, from the outside having a cat that can tell when someone is about to die is rather creepy."
Lorelei sighed. "Fine, I'll leave her here if you insist. You have to give her some extra attention, though. I almost never leave her alone overnight and she's upset and lonely. Let her sit on your lap, pet her, feel free to give her a couple of treats if you want to. Just be nice to her, all right?"
"I've never been mean to her, even when I wasn't comfortable around her," her mother said, sniffing. "Of course, I will be nice to her."
"All right. Call me if she starts acting strangely, okay? And call me right away if she gets outside."
"I will, I will," her mother said. "We'll be fine. Go on, you've got your coffee shop to worry about."
Lorelei put the cat carrier away reluctantly.
